Okay, it’s official: We’re claiming Emma Stone as our dream celebrity BFF. Not only does she have an enviable wardrobe and killer lip-syncing skills (we would hire her and Jimmy Fallon to perform at our launch party if we could!), but this girl is wise. In a recent interview with Seventeen, the star spoke candidly about body confidence, sisterhood and self respect.
“It can be really challenging in today’s world for anyone—especially girls and women—to feel good about their bodies. No matter how things look from the outside, we can all be super critical of ourselves and of our image in the mirror,” she says.
Stone also opens up about tabloids speculating about her weight.
“I’ve seen articles or comments that have addressed my weight, or ‘caving to pressure to be thin.’ Keeping weight on is a struggle for me—especially when I’m under stress, and especially as I’ve gotten older. That’s the way my genes have decided to go, and things will change as time goes on, as does everything. So when completely untrue statements are made about me or my health, of course a part of me wants to defend,” she says.
“My job at those moments is to tell myself the truth,” she adds. “Am I taking care of myself in a healthy way? Am I respecting myself and being responsible? And over and over, I answer yes to that question. Then I remind myself to be kind to myself, and as slightly ridiculous as it may sound, to treat myself in the same gentle way I’d want to treat a daughter of mine. It really helps.”
She ends with something of a rallying cry, calling on young women to be less hard on ourselves and each other.
“My great hope for us as young women is to start being kinder to ourselves so that we can be kinder to each other. To stop shaming ourselves and other people for things we don’t know the full story on – whether someone is too fat, too skinny, too short, too tall, too loud, too quiet, too anything. There’s a sense that we’re all ‘too’ something, and we’re all not enough…I hope we can be supportive of each other and try to really have each other’s backs, especially when we don’t know the whole story.”
If the current wave of starlets followed Emma’s lead, Hollywood would be in good hands. Talk about a role model!
